Cornelius Louis Wilde (October 13, 1915 in New York City, USA; October 16, 1989 in Los Angeles, USA) was an American actor and film director. Cornel Wilde's birth name was Kornel Weisz, and his parents were Hungarian Jews. His father, a traveling salesman, took his son on trips throughout Europe, which encouraged Wilde's talent for languages (he spoke Hungarian, French, German, English, Italian, and Russian). In 1920, the family emigrated to the United States. The highly intelligent Cornel finished high school at the age of 14. He began studying medicine and completed his undergraduate studies a year earlier than usual, but decided to become an actor. Wilde was also an excellent fencer and already had a place on the American fencing team for the 1936 Olympic Games, but he turned it down because of a theater role. In 1940, Wilde was hired as a fencing coach for Laurence Olivier, who was appearing on Broadway in Romeo and Juliet. Olivier gave his coach the role of Tybalt, which brought Wilde to Hollywood's attention. Wilde had smaller roles until 1945, when he played Frédéric Chopin in A Song to Remember. This film, for which he received an Oscar nomination, was his breakthrough. He mostly acted in adventure films (with fencing scenes, of course), but also in serious dramas such as Leave Her to Heaven (1945). In 1955, Wilde founded his own film company, Theodora Productions, and produced film noirs. He produced, directed and starred in The Naked Prey (1966), in which he plays a safari participant hunted by an African tribe. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Wilde was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
